Week 13 – End of Term Exam for A&P Systems

Objectives:

  • Successfully complete the End of Term Exam.

Assignment:

  • Participate in Lab (2-4 hours).
  • Complete End of Term Exam.
  • Review the answers and discuss any questions.
  • Discuss next term class schedule.

Week 12 – Fluid Balance and Acid-Base Balance and End of Term Review

Objectives:

  • Review examples of different pH levels found in fluids in your body.
  • Be able to list the characteristics of electrolytes and non-electrolytes.
  • Review the entire term and be ready for the End of Term Exam next week.

Assignment:

  • Review the Lecture Notes pp. 1.601.61 Fluid and Acid-Base Balance.
  • Read Chapters 18 & 19 in your text book.
  • Review all chapters covered this term: Chapters 8-19 in your text book.
  • Participate in Lab (2-4 hours) discussing the material from the entire term.
  • Test – Endocrine System (Lecture Notes pp. 1.55-1.59).
  • Review Chapters 18 & 19 Fluid and Acid-Base Balance
  • Review all lecture notes for the term (pp. 1.1 – 1.61).
  • Complete evaluation of the term.
  • End of Term Review – Cumulative Exam next week.

Week 11 – Endocrine System

Objectives:

  • Review the structures of the endocrine system.
  • Be able to list the difference between exocrine and endocrine glands.
  • List the hormones of the pituitary gland.

Assignment:

  • Watch the videos for the Endocrine System lecture (Videos 1-2)
  • Review the Lecture Notes pp. 1.55-1.59, Key Word List
  • Read Chapter 10 in your textbook.
  • Complete the following questions and email your answers prior to Lab:
    • What is the difference between exocrine and endocrine glands?
    • What hormones are secreted from the anterior pituitary gland?
    • What is the purpose of up-regulation?
    • What is the difference between insulin and glucagon?
  • Participate in Lab (2 hours) discussing the Endocrine System.

Week 10 – Lymphatic System

Objectives:

  • Review the muscles of the upper extremities.
  • Be able to list the insertion, origin and action of the muscles.
  • List the rotator cuff muscles. What is their acronym?

Assignment:

  • Watch the videos for the Lymphatic System lecture (Videos 1-3)
  • Review the Lecture Notes pp. 1.52-1.54, Key Word List
  • Read Chapter 13 in your textbook.
  • Complete the following questions and email your answers prior to Lab:
    • What is another name for the left lymphatic duct?
    • What are the two primary lymphatic tissues?
    • List 3 places where we do not find lymph capillaries.

Week 09 – Circulatory System

Objectives:

  • Review the flow of blood through the heart.
  • Be able to list the different parts of the heart wall and heart sac.
  • List what makes the sounds of the heart.
  • State the different types of circulation in the body.

Assignment:

  • Watch the videos for the Circulatory System lecture (Videos 1-2)
  • Review the Lecture Notes pp. 1.461.51, Crossword Puzzle
  • Read Chapter 12 in your textbook.

Week 08 – The Blood

Objectives:

  • Review structures and functions of blood cells.
  • Be able to list the parts of whole blood.
  • List the different functions of blood.
  • State the five different white blood cells.

Assignment:

  • Watch the videos for the Chapter 11 The Blood lecture (Videos 1-3)
  • Review the Lecture Notes pp. 1.40-1.46, Flow of blood thru the heart chart
  • Read Chapter 11 in your text book.
  • Complete the following questions and email your answers prior to Lab:
    • Explain the difference between agranulocytes and granulocytes.
    • What are the functions of blood?
    • State how long each of the blood cells live.
    • What is the order of the differential white blood cell count?

Week 07 – Nutrition

Objectives:

  • Review the bones which make up the Appendicular Skeleton.
  • Be able to list the number of bones in the appendicular skeletons.
  • List the different bones in the Lower Extremities.
  • State the function of the pelvic girdle.

  • Watch the videos for the Nutrition lecture (Videos 1-4)

Week 05 – Nervous System and Special Senses

  • Review the SNS and ANS branches of the Nervous System.

Week 04 – Nervous System – Brain, Cranial Nerves and Spinal Nerves

Objectives:

  • Review the Brain and Spinal cord.
  • Be able to explain how the cranial nerves and spinal nerves branch from the CNS.
  • List examples of the spinal reflexes.
  • State what makes white matter ‘white’.

Assignment:

  • Watch the videos for the Chapter 8 Nervous System: CNS & PNS lecture (Videos 1-3)
  • Review the Lecture Notes pp. 1.16-1.21, Cranial Nerves
  • Read Chapter 8 in your text book
  • Complete the following questions and email your answers prior to Lab:

Week 03 – Nervous System – General Overview

Objectives:

  • Review examples of the four tissue groups.
  • Be able to list the characteristics for each tissue group.
  • List the different layers of the skin and the type of tissue in each layer.
  • State the functions of the integumentary system.

Assignment:

  • Watch the videos for the Chapter 8 Nervous System General Overview lecture (Videos 1-2)
  • Review the Lecture Notes pp. 1.12-1.15, Work Sheet, Plexus Chart
  • Read Chapter 8 in your text book
  • Complete the following questions and email your answers prior to Lab:
    • Explain the difference between the CNS and PNS.

Week 02 – Urinary System

Objectives:

  • Review the blood chemical balance through the workings of the urinary system.
  • List the flow of urine in the body.
  • Identify the structures which make up the nephron.
  • Differentiate between filtration and reabsorption.

Assignment:

  • Watch the videos for the Chapter 17 Urinary System lecture (Videos 1-2)
  • Review the Lecture Notes pp. 1.7 – 1.11, Multiple Choice Worksheet, Key Word List
  • Read Chapter 17 in your text book
  • Complete the following questions and email your answers prior to Lab:
    • Explain the difference between filtration and reabsorption.
    • Where do we find the highest blood pressure?
    • What passes through the Bowman’s capsule most easily?
    • What hormone increases water permeability?

  • What is the next step: Next Term, Graduation, Provisional Licensure, Boards?

Week 12 – Review for the End of Term Exam

Objectives:

  • Discuss the brochure and business card assignments.
  • Review the material covered over the term.
  • Discuss “What If?” scenarios to determine professional approaches to sticky situations.

Assignment:

  • Read Chapters 11 in the Business Mastery text before the end of term.
  • Let you instructor know if you are interested in developing a Business Plan.
  • Answer the following questions for discussion in Lab:
    • What questions do I have about the massage field, running a business, or situations I might be confronted with in our profession?
    • What questions do I have about the Board Exam?
    • When can I begin using my Q&A book to prepare for the Board Exam?
    • When do I complete CPR/First Aid training?
  • Participate in Lab (4 hours) reviewing for the End of Term exam and discussing questions pertinent to our future work in the profession.
  • Discuss and return the completed brochure and business card assignments.

Week 11 – Professionalism

Objectives:

  • Discuss the keys to a successful professional.
  • Review the various ways to promote our profession.
  • Determine areas you would like to work on to boost your professionalism.

Assignment:

  • Watch the video for the Professionalism lecture (Videos 1-2)
  • Read Chapters 17 in the Business Mastery text.
  • Turn in final brochure and business card.
  • Answer the following questions for discussion in Lab:
    • What areas of my professional life are strengths?
    • What areas of my professional life would I like to strengthen?
    • What attributes do I admire in massage/bodywork professionals?
  • Participate in Lab (2 hours) discussing Professionalism in our business.

Week 10 – Set Up Your Business

Objectives:

  • Discuss the cost of opening up your own business.
  • Determine the difference between professional liability insurance and other business insurance coverage.
  • Review HIPAA, Client Release form, and state inspection requirements.
  • Determine the type of business owner you desire to be.
  • Evaluate IRS tax forms and their requirements.

Assignment:

  • Watch the video for the Setting Up Your Business lecture (Video 1)
  • Turn in your cost of advertising assignment (business card size ad)
  • Turn in draft of business brochure.
  • Formulate your ideas for your business: location, size, type, etc.
  • Read Chapters 10 & 14 in the Business Mastery text.
  • Answer the following questions for discussion in Lab:
    • What type of business ownership are you interested in? (see handout)
    • What is the cost of Professional Liability Insurance?
    • Find out the cost of square footage of a commercial property in an area you may want to open up your own business.
  • Print the following IRS forms: 1040, Schedule C, Form B, Schedule SE, 1040ES.
  • Contact an insurance agent and find out the cost of a Business Package Policy for $20K in contents, CGL $500/1M. Use a zip code location of your choice.
  • Participate in Lab (2 hours) discuss how to set up your business.
    • Review HIPAA, Client Release and Health Insurance Claim Forms.
    • Discuss IRS forms: 1040, Schedule C, Form B, Schedule SE, 1040ES.

Week 08 – Brochures, Newsletters, and Business Cards

Objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of how to create a brochure for your business.
  • Discuss the important criteria for a brochure vs. a business card.
  • Formulate and deliver your money spiel.
  • Determine how print media can promote your business: newsletters, postcards, brochures, news articles.

Assignment:

  • Watch the video for the Brochures lecture (Video 1)
  • Design your final brochure and business card which is due Week 11.
  • Formulate your business spiel, mission statement and slogan.
  • Read Chapter 8 in the Business Mastery text.
  • Answer the following questions for discussion in Lab:
    • What criteria is important to be included in your brochure?
    • What are you going to charge per hour?
    • What discounts, series sales, enticements are you going to use?
    • List your services and prices in a Price List.

Objectives:

  • Develop an effective resume and practice interview skills.
  • Discuss criteria for a website and social media.
  • Review various digital media used in promotion.
  • Determine the cost to advertise in a local paper.

Assignment:

  • Watch the video for the Social Media/Resume lecture (Videos 1-3)
  • Design your resume to be discussed in this week’s Lab.
  • Formulate your ideas for a website and social media platform.
  • Read Chapters 12 & 15 in the Business Mastery text.
  • Answer the following questions for discussion in Lab:
    • What criteria is important to be included in your website?
    • What are you going to list on your resume?
    • List 5 different types of digital media as a means of promoting your business.
  • Bring in two examples of websites that you like and discuss their attributes.
  • Bring in two social media sites that you like and discuss their attributes.

Week 06 – Oriental Medicine

Objectives:

  • Compare Eastern and Western Medicine.
  • Discuss the Chinese Five Element Theory of TCM.
  • Explain Ayurvedic Medicine and the Chakras and what they generally govern.

Assignment:

  • Watch the videos for the Oriental Medicine lecture (Videos 1-2)
  • This lecture and class discussion is a 4 hour participatory/interactive format.
  • All handouts are given in class.
  • The material covered in class is 50% of the Final Exam.

Week 07 – Networking

Objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of how to form a network to build your business.
  • Discuss networking tips to develop a business database.
  • Formulate and deliver your business spiel.
  • Determine the cost to advertise in a local paper.

Assignment:

  • Watch the videos for the Networking lecture (Videos 1-2)
  • Complete the networking assignment by Week 11 (Find 2 therapists to interview).
  • Formulate and deliver your business spiel in Lab.
  • Read Chapters 9 & 16 in the Business Mastery text.
  • Review the Networking Tips and Group Checklist.
  • Discuss the Vital Career Decision worksheet.
  • Answer the following questions for discussion in Lab:
    • Create a list of 30 people who you would want in your network.
    • Create a list of 25 health care professions you would want in your network.
    • List 10 or more ways that we communicate as massage therapists.
    • Contact a local paper or magazine and find out the cost of a business card size ad.
